Hex Bolts

HEX BOLTS are a very common bolt when it comes to construction or repair. The standard hex bolt has a smooth shoulder area with a sufficient amount of threading. Hex bolts are also known as hex cap screws or machine bolts used for construction, automotive, marine, high temperature or restoration applications. Hex bolts are available in a wide variety of sizes and materials. Hex head bolts are constructed with a set amount of threading or fully threaded depending on the length of the bolt.

Hex Bolts are a headed and externally threaded fastener designed to be assembled with a nut.  Bolts are designed for insertion through holes in assembly of parts and mated with a tapered nut.  Tension is induced in the bolt to compress the assembly by rotating the nut, and can also be accomplished by the rotation of the bolt head.

Hex bolts are measured from under the head to the tip of the bolt

Steel Grade 2 bolts and fasteners are low to carbon steel from ¼ inch to 1-1/2 inch with a medium tensile strength of 74,000 psi in diameters to ¾ in and 60,000 psi for diameters over ¾ in. through 1-1/2 in.  Grade 2 fasteners are economical for use in non-critical applications where fasteners are not subject to extreme stress or temperatures.

Grade 5 Bolts and fasteners are made of medium carbon steel, heat treated in a controlled atmosphere from ¼ in. through 1-1/2 in. with a minimum tensile strength of 120,000 psi in diameters through 1 in.  and 105,000 psi for diameters over 1 in. through 1-1/2 in.

Grade 8 Bolts and fasteners are comprised of carbon-alloy steel, heat treated in a carbon controlled atmosphere and are generally the most durable and reliable fastener. Grade 8 bolts have the highest ratings with tensile strength of 150,000 psi.  Grade 8 bolts are used marine, military, aerospace, off-road vehicle markets and related mechanical applications where stress and strong load bearing pressure is required.

The L-9® Hex Head Bolt is part of the L-9® Fastening System that is designed for high stress and severe service environments. This system consists of the L9hex bolt, 2 L9 washers, L9 hex nut, and/or L9 hex locknut. The L-9® system is 20% stronger than the grade-8 bolt and it’s special features control torque tension characteristics to develop high clamp loads when using properly controlled tightening methods. The L-9® system is made from AISI steel.

Lag Bolts or lag screws are used for fastening in wood materials. Commonly used to secure wooden posts and beams, lag bolts are also used for various household type construction projects including attaching wood to masonry or concrete.

Tap Bolts or tap screws are a hex head bolt with a fully threaded shank. They are used in drilled and tapped holes instead of a stud and nut. Tap bolts can be used in  a variety of projects including marine and exterior woodworking applications.

12 Point Flange Bolts have an alternative head design than standard hex socket cap screws. The twelve point design permits greater torque to be applied to the screw which eliminates rounding out of the hex socket that can occur with fasteners of this type.  U-Bolt-It recommends 12 point flange bolts for aircraft, mining, transportation, and agriculture manufacturing applications as well as diesel engine and transmission assemblies.

A325 Heavy Hex Structural Bolts are designed to withstand temperature variations while sustaining maximum strength and durability. Available in ASTM A-325, Type 1 and Type 1 Hot Galvanized, structural fasteners are commonly found in construction industries because of the strong alloy composition, reliability and ability to endure enormous pressure.
