Materials, Grades, Coatings

Fasteners and other hardware are designed and manufactured in a wide range of materials from common steel to titanium, plastic and other exotic materials. Many materials are further separated into different grades to describe specific alloy mixtures, hardening processes, temperature protection, and applications. Some materials are available with a variety of coatings or plating to enhance the corrosion resistance, or appearance of the fastener.

U-Bolt-It provides the following materials and coatings for your specific application:

Steel - Links are extremely abrasion resistant.

Alloy Steel is what you want for maximum security. This chain has square links, which make it difficult to cut with bolt cutters.

Alloy 20 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum stainless steel alloy developed for applications involving strong corrosive situations. Its strong corrosion resistance is used in the chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and plastics industries. Alloy 20 resists pitting and chloride ion corrosion and its copper content protects it from sulfuric acid.

A286 nickel alloy provides high strength up to temperatures of 1300° F and corrosion resistance up to a constant temperature of 1500° F.  A286 is used to produce a wide variety of fasteners including nuts, bolts, screws, studs and other custom hardware.

Brass Alloy 260 chain is nonmagnetic and non-sparking. Good for light to medium duty material handling in hazardous areas and suitable for barrier chain, decorative purposes, and suspending fixtures.

luminum chain is light weight, nonmagnetic, non-sparking, and resists corrosion from salt water, food, and many chemicals. Besides being excellent for chemical and food processing, it's also rustproof, lightweight, and very easy to handle.

18-8 Stainless Steel is part of the 300 series stainless steel alloys containing approximately 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel. 18/8 stainless is most commonly used in applications that require non-magnetic fasteners and hardware.

302 stainless steel chain offers excellent corrosion resistance for food processing, industrial and marine environment applications. Possesses non-magnetic properties and outstanding toughness at all temperatures.

304 Stainless Steel has good resistance to atmospheric corrosion resistance. Typical uses for 304 stainless chains include chemical, food processing, paper, pharmaceutical and chemical industry applications.

309 Stainless Steel alloy is best known for its high strength and oxidation resistance in continuous service applications. This alloy withstands temperatures up to 2000 F (1093 C). It is superior to 304 stainless in both strength and corrosion resistance.

316 Stainless Steel has superior corrosion resistance which is ideal for chemical, food processing, coastal and offshore marine applications. 316 stainless chain offers oxidation resistance, good mechanical properties and is used in many industries, including paper, mining, pharmaceutical and petroleum industries.

410 Stainless Steel is the basic martensitic stainless steel that was developed  to provide a category of stainless alloys that would be corrosion resistant and hardened by  heat treating. Grade 410 is machinable and used in applications where high strength, moderate heat and corrosion resistance requirements are key.

B-8 Stainless Steel is non-magnetic and has good corrosion resistance properties. B-8 stainless has a 75,000 psi tensile strength and has the same material as AISI type 304 stainless steel

B-8M Stainless Steel material is similar to B8 except has added Molybdenum. Because it has better corrosion resistance than B8, hex bolts, studs and other fasteners are common to the B8M specification.

17-4 PH Stainless Steel is a martensitic, chromium-nickel-copper stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and moderate levels of corrosion resistance. Stainless 17-4 PH is used in a wide range of applications that include aircraft structural parts, fasteners, pump shafts, valve parts, chemical & food processing equipment, and nuclear components.

Bolts & Cap Screws

J Bolts are used as anchors in concrete foundations with threading that runs along the flat arm of the J. Commonly used as cast-in-place anchors, J bolts provide strong support and stability with the shape hooking the bolt in place so that it will not come loose.  These anchor bolts are used to support structural steel columns, bridge railing, light pole fixtures, highway sign construction, and many other structure based applications.

U Bolts are shaped like the letter U, with threaded arms advancing from the curved base.  The threaded ends of the U bolt are designed to be inserted through drilled holes and used with washers and nuts.  U bolts can also be fitted with a cross piece and used to attach objects to pipe, poles or beams.

Foundation Bolts are used to attach forms or structures to concrete foundations. They consist of a threaded end for a washer and nut and an angled end to set in the foundation. Foundation bolts are used in various construction projects from simple homes to large commercial buildings and dams. Anchor bolts are set in concrete foundation forms used to support building construction, posts, highway signs, porch, and deck supports.

Eye Bolts are basically a screw with a loop at one end and threads at the other end.  Common uses for eyebolts are attaching cables to fixed objects.

Lag Bolts or lag screws are used for fastening in wood materials. Commonly used to secure wooden posts and beams, lag bolts are also used for various household type construction projects including attaching wood to masonry or concrete..

Tap Bolts or tap screws are a hex head bolt with a fully threaded shank. They are used in drilled and tapped holes instead of a stud and nut. Tap bolts can be used in  a variety of projects including marine and exterior woodworking applications.

Plow Bolts are generally flat headed and used in low profile applications where a smooth surface is needed.  Plow bolts wear along with the metal surface and best suited for farm equipment, snow plows and similar heavy equipment scraping blades.

Hanger Bolts are a headless fastener that have wood threads at one end and machine threaded stud at the other. Frequently found in furniture to attach table legs, hanger bolts are also used in the timber construction.

Elevator Bolts have a large flat head diameter, square neck and threaded body. Most often used industrial or agricultural belting or conveying systems, elevator bolts are also used with canvas or other soft, pliable materials to keep from pulling through the material. Elevator bolts can be used for leveling household appliances.

Carriage Bolts have a round head and square neck that prevents the bolt from turning when the nut is tightened.  Carriage bolts are used in wood or metal construction applications where the square neck grips into the part being fixed preventing the head from turning.

All Thread Studs are made from cutting all thread rod to length.  It can be sawed or bent for a variety of general purpose fastening applications. It is excellent for quick assembly and disassembly and durable enough for reuse.

12 Point Flange Bolts have an alternative head design than standard hex socket cap screws. The twelve point design permits greater torque to be applied to the screw which eliminates rounding out of the hex socket that can occur with fasteners of this type.  U-Bolt-It recommends 12 point flange bolts for aircraft, mining, transportation, and agriculture manufacturing applications as well as diesel engine and transmission assemblies.

Hex Head Cap Screws are very similar to the hex bolt, however, they are manufactured to a much closer tolerance than the corresponding bolts.  U-Bolt-It stocks these fasteners in sizes from 0.250” to 3” diameter.

Machine Screws

Machine screws are smaller in diameter ranging from 0.250in up to 0.75 in. diameter and are threaded the entire length of the shank. These types of fasteners are most often used in tapped holes tightened with a nut. Most machine screws have a round or flat head, have a slot or Philips drive, and used to join metal parts using a hex or square nut. Machine screws are also made with socket heads and then referred to as socket head machine screws.

Common types of Machine Screws include:

Flat Head Machine Screws

Hex Head machine Screws

Oval Head machine Screws

Pan Head Machine Screws

Truss Head machine Screws

Round Head machine Screws

Fillister Head Machine Screws

Thumb Screws are a type of fastener with a tall head and ridged or knurled sides, or a flat vertical head, intended to be tightened and loosened by hand.  Thumb screws are used in applications where recurrent unfastening and fastening is required without the use of tools.

Wood Screws

Wood Screws are primarily used for connecting wood-to-wood projects with strong clamping abilities.  Two most common head types of wood screws are slotted (flathead) and Philips (cross-head) and are made from a variety of materials including steel, stainless, brass, and nylon.

Drywall Screws are a specialized self-tapping fastener with a bugle head and cylindrical shaft designed to attach drywall to wood or metal studs. The sharp point allows these screws to penetrate undrilled plaster and tapered shape of an arc keeps drywall from cracking plaster.

Tapping Screws, Self-Tapping Screws or sheet metal screws create their own mating thread in pre-drilled holes. Type A and AB are the more typical sheet metal screws with a fairly sharp point.  The Type A screw have wider spaced threads for self starting in thin metal or resin filled plywood.  Type AB screws have more threads per inch that are used in brittle material.  Type B tapping screws have a blunt end that are best suited for thru-holes in plastics, thin metal, and non-ferrous materials. U-Drive Tapping Screws have round heads and have multiple starting threads.

Self Drilling Screws (or Teks) are designed for use in soft steel or other metals and have Drill Bit Points that do not require holes to be pre-drilled.  The points of self drilling screws are numbered from 1 through 5.  The larger the number, the thicker metal (up to 0.5 in or 13mm) it can penetrate without a pilot hole.

Floorboard Screws use a countersunk hole to provide a flush finished surface. Floorboard screws are specifically designed for the installation of wood floors in truck trailers or fastening wood to the interior of containers. These screws are measured from the top of the head to tip.

Thread Cutting Screws are a type of fastener that cuts its own thread in mating material. Typically used in place of thread forming screws, thread cutting screws are used when extreme torque is required to drive the screw. Thread cutting screws are available in a variety of head drive types including slotted, Philips, Torx and hex styles.

*All are available in slotted, phillips, square & combination drives*

The strict tolerance makes U-Bolt-It dowel pins excellent for achieving proper alignment of parts in high-speed assemblies, or as roller bearings in heavy transportation wheel housings.

Cotter Pins are a double bodied pin formed from half-round wire with a loop at one end providing a head and with one wire extending beyond the other at the opposite end, chiseled to a point. These hardware fasteners can be used to anchor assemblies by insertion into a drilled hole of a shaft or pin and spreading the points to secure the assembly in position. When used with castle nuts, cotter pins become

safety locking devices.

Clevis Pins are a solid pin with a cylindrical head, chamfered point, and drilled hole through the side of the pin, slightly back from the end.  Designed to be used with a cotter pin, clevis pins are used for securing a clevis to a load, or temporarily replacing bolts and rivets, these pins are normally made from carbon steel and are also available in stainless steel. We Stock clevis pins in diameters from 3/16" to 1 1/2" and lengths from 1/2" to 9". Ask about assortments

Spirol Pins are hollow cylindrical pins made from wound spring steel sheet. The diameter of the pin is slightly larger than the nominal diameter of the hole into which the pin will be inserted. The pin is compressed as it is inserted into the hole and the spring action of the pin holds it in position.

Screw Eyes have a wood screw thread for use in wood or lag anchors. Like wire eye bolts, these fasteners are intended for light duty applications and should not be used for angular loads. Screw eyes are available in large, medium, small & short shank sizes, made of steel or stainless steel.

NUTS

Kep Nuts are hex head nuts with a pre-assembled, free spinning external tooth lockwasher. Eliminates the need for separate nut-side washers.

Tee Nuts are internally threaded barrel-shaped fasteners with 3, 4 or 6 prongs extending from a flat base. Primarily used for fastening metal to wood, particle board or plastic products, Tee-nuts put steel threads into pre-drilled wood without counter boring.

Wing Nuts have wing a shaped protrusion designed for speed and convenience that are tightened and loosened by hand.  Wing nuts are ideal in speedy marine applications where it is harder to use tools in any kind of intricate work on the open sea.

Panel Nuts are designed to be thin with the width diameter close to the diameter of the fastener they are securing.  Hexagonal or round panel nuts are chamfered on all surfaces, have no cutoff burs and are free of slivers and flakes. Panel nuts provide a low profile and are used in light duty applications.

Acorn Nuts have a crown, or dome, covering. Since they have a closed top, Acorn Nuts are chosen for safety reasons, to cover protruding threaded mating parts, and for decorative improvement.

Flange Nuts have flat and serrated designs designed to act as an integrated, non-spinning washer, eliminating the need for a separate washer. Serrated flange nuts are fabricated with a built in serrated washer that resist loosening due to vibration.

Square Nuts and Hex Square Nuts have four equal sides. These nuts have a flat bottom side and a chamfered top-side and can be used in a channel or welded in place. Square nuts are still common, but widely replaced by Hex nuts.

Heavy Hex Nuts are the strongest of all comparably graded designs, both thicker and wider across the flats than standard finished hex nuts of the same size. They are available in a variety of grades and the heavy pattern is typically used for large diameter and high strength bolts. Heavy hex nuts have a greater length of thread engagement and better resistance to stretching or widening.

Slotted Hex Nuts have opposed slots cut into the top of the hex nut through the center of flats. Slots are cut into the non-bearing surface of the nut. Used for general purpose fastening and locking, slotted hex nuts can be used with cotter pins or safety wire through the slots and through the hole drilled shank of the fastener.

Finished Hex Nuts are the most common and versatile hex nut design. Offered in a multitude of materials and finishes, Finished Hex Nuts can be used in almost every application.

Special Coatings

Zinc Metal Coatings has a number of characteristics that make it well-suited for use for protecting iron and steel products from corrosion. Its excellent corrosion resistance in most environments accounts for its successful use as a protective coating on a variety of products and in many exposure conditions. The excellent field performance of zinc coatings results from their ability to form dense, adherent corrosion product films and a rate of corrosion considerably below that of ferrous materials, some 10 to 100 times slower, depending upon the environment. While a fresh zinc surface is quite reactive when exposed to the atmosphere, a thin film of corrosion products develops rapidly, greatly reducing the rate of further corrosion.

Teflon Coating are designed for fasteners and hardware when they are to be exposed to harsh chemical and salt water environments and must be able to function without regard to environmental conditions. Many Teflon® industrial coatings withstand severe temperature extremes without loss of physical properties and may used at temperatures as low as -270°C/-454°F.

Xylan coatings provide reduced friction, good wear resistant, high temperature resistance, high resistance to abrasion, corrosion resistance, and can be applied to virtually all metals including aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper and copper alloys, and titanium. In environments where lubricated air is not allowed by OSHA regulations or other considerations, air-cylinder pistons should be coated. The easiest, most effective way to eliminate the oil/air problem and provide proper lubrication for moving parts is to coat air-cylinder pistons with 25 microns/0.001 in. of Xylan 8110, which also extends the lives of the pistons.

Cadmium  coatings are applied to iron, steel, brass and aluminum and give excellent resistance to corrosion in most conditions and especially in marine and alkaline environments. Cadmium coatings are particularly useful in the electrical, electronic, aerospace, mining, offshore, automotive and defense industries where they are applied to bolts and other fasteners, chassis, connectors and like components.

Hot Dipped Galvanized is a zinc coating, usually hot-dipped, in which the zinc and steel form a metallurgical bond. The thickness of a hot-dipped coating can be varied from a thin zinc/iron alloy layer to heavy applications suitable for extended outdoor exposure. In-line galvanized coatings are applied during the manufacturing process of the hollow or open section, with the cleaned steel section exiting the mill and passing into the galvanizing bath. This coating is usually measured as thickness or as coating mass in grams per square meter and ranges from a minimum of about 100 g/m2 upwards, with an average around 175 g/m2.

Washers

U-Bolt-It is a major distributor of standard and custom washers and metal stampings used in a wide variety of residential, commercial and industrial applications.

Besides standard Flat Washers, we also provide Bevel, Fender, Plate, Dock, Torque, and more.  Standard Lock, Tooth Lock, and Wave Lock washers are available to meet your specifications.

Washers are available in any quantity, made from any stampable material including steel, Monel, stainless steel, aluminum and alloys. With our wide range of sizes from small number sizes to 8”, rest assured, we have the right fastener for you.

Metal and non-metallic washers are placed between material surfaces and beneath a nut, axel-bearing, or joint to prevent loosening and leakage, isolate vibration, and evenly distribute pressure or relieve friction.

Belleville Washers have a slight conical shape that give it a spring like characteristic. These washers are also known as coned-disc spring or cupped spring washer and can be used as springs to apply a pre-load or flexibility to a bolted joint. Belleville washers are especially suited for high loads in small spaces

Beveled Washers are a type of flat washer that is either square or circular with one surface consisting of a sloping angle. Generally used in structural applications, beveled washers fasten bolts through I-beam flanges to generate a parallel surface.

Bonded Sealing Washers are galvanized and have rubber attached to act as a cushion under the head of a bolt or nut, prevents leakage, and help seal joints. These washers are strong, yet soft and resilient enough to use with fragile materials.  Bonded sealing washers are typically used in outdoors applications to protect against corrosion.

Combination Tooth Lock Washers have twisted teeth or prongs on both the inside and outside edges.  Combination tooth lock washers are ideal where a greater load bearing surface is desired, greater electrical connection is optimum, or used where two adjustable pieces need rotational adjustment maintained.

Countersunk External Tooth Washers bite into the nut or screw head and the contact surface creating a ratchet type action for superior material holding.  When tightened, the countersunk tooth washers increase tension to prevent loosening.

Countersunk Finishing Washers are cupped-shaped most frequently used with flat head or oval head screws. These finishing washers provide an additional holding area on fastened materials leaving a clean and neat appearance.

Dock Washers are similar to fender washers but a have a larger diameter and are thicker. Heavy duty galvanized dock washers are best used for outdoor, heavy duty load bearing applications.

External Tooth Lock Washers are circular with twisted teeth or prongs protruding from the outside  edges that applies greater bolt tension when tightened.  This causes more uniform load distribution and resists loosening caused by corrosion or vibration.

Fender Washers were originally designed for auto body repair and have a larger outside working area.  Because they provide extra working area support, they are also used in plumbing, sheet metal and electrical applications. Fender washers are great for attaching signs, paneling and drywall.

Finishing Washers provide a tight, even pressure to secure two materials together.  Finishing washers are intended for use where consistent pressure is key and to improve overall strength and quality of the product.

Flat Washers are circular with a center hole, are most commonly used to meet a broad range of fastening applications.

Hi Collar Lock Washers have a slightly smaller O.D. to use in confined areas. These washers have an increased thickness that sustains the overall locking abilities.  Hi Collar lock washers are recommended to be used with socket head cap screws and in areas where there are clearance restrictions.

Internal Tooth Lock Washers are round with twisted teeth or prongs on the inside lip and hidden by the head of the screw or bolt. Internal tooth washers are preferred when appearance is critical for finished products.

Load Indicator Washers are used to ensure correct tension when installing A325 or A490 structural bolts.  Load indicating washers are an accurate, yet simple and cost effective means for inspecting bolts that require a specific level of clamping force and tension.

Lock Washers add pressure to the nut or bolt to prevent loosening.  Most common lock washers are split with one end is higher than the other. This provides a spring like action, adding pressure to hold the joined components tightly in place.

Plate Washers are generally made from low carbon steel and develop more friction when tightened against wood products.  Plate washers prevent bolt heads and nuts from being pulled into work surfaces and expansion anchors tighten easier.

SAE Washers are similar to USS washers but with a smaller inside and outside diameter and produced from thinner materials.  SAE washers are designed to meet the specifications in the automotive engineering field.

Torque Washers are formed with sharp prongs to sink into the mating surface. These washers are used where non-rotation between the washer and surface is required.

USS Washers are a thin, flat, circular type with a centrally located hole.  USS washers meet the majority of industrial manufacturing, maintenance, and repair applications.
